Dutch Design Awards 2012

And of course we also attended the Award Show for Dutch Design this year. On Sunday October 21 from 13:30 hrs – 17:00 at the Torenallee on Strijp-S.

This lustrum year, the 10th edition was once again a memorable edition. A totally new concept was presented. There was storytelling! Italian Prof. Simonetta Carbonaro, an expert in consumer psychology, strategic marketing and design management, explained the liquidity of societies… From a consumers perspective she could point out how and why certain decisions are made. An inspiring speech, which was received with much praise.

Since the DDA are a platform for new development in design as well as established design, a broad scale of categories were presented. Three featured awards:

The ‘BNO Piet Zwart award‘ (a lifetime achievement award) was won by Gerard Unger. A well deserved award for Typography.

The great winner, who won the “Best Dutch design project” and the  ‘Golden-Eye award‘ was : ‘Part of a Bigger Plan & Christian Borstlap’ for an animation for Louis Vuitton. The animation is an hommage to the designer Louis Vuitton.

What the International Jury said:

“This animation is an ode to the industrial revolution through the ages. There is a good balance between serious and playful, without ever becoming childish. We praise the multi-layeredness: the message, the execution, the historical value, the story and even some kind of mild self-mockery are all present and in balance. Analogue craftsmanship and digital mastery go hand in hand.”

The award for ‘Best Consumer Product’ was won by: Scholten & Baijings for tableware for Arita 1616. Arita 1616 is one of the oldest porcelain manufacturers in Japan.

What the International Jury said:

“This delicate service emanates absolute harmony, both in form, color and the application of glaze. The design subtly makes use of the past, which is what makes it strong. It is an ultimate match between consumer culture on the one hand and the design proposition on the other.”

We loved every minute of the DDA 2012… Please visit the website as well  and enjoy!!
